We Can Rise

by Kim Capps

Bent, almost broken , Do you think that we can rise?

Drowning in our doubts and fears,  not sure if we can rise

But I’m tired  of looking down, I want to turn my gaze above

The only way to turn this tide is leaning into love

Can we rise?    can we rise?   can we rise--I believe that we can rise

So you say we should be running scared   but what if we can rise?

Hate will never take us there, not if we really want to rise

Building walls won’t help us to see eye to eye

with the brothers and the sisters living on the other side

Can we rise,    can we rise    can we rise?    I believe that we can rise

I believe I believe  together we can rise

I believe, I believe together we can rise

I believe I believe  together we can rise

I believe, I believe together we can rise

Alone I can do little,  but  together we can rise

We’ll have to build some bridges  but together we can rise

None of us have wings,  alone we cannot fly

But when we raise each other up we are moving toward the sky

We can rise,  we can rise, we can rise,   we believe we can rise

My Hands, your hands, our hands together we can rise

If you want respect you’ve got to give it,

if you want justice got to live it

Cross the divide tear down walls, lift each other up

Rise, rise, rise

Together we can move those walls.
